The Raid on Nobeoka (March 1468)

The Spears of Kamigoryo, along with their stalwart pirate companion Kuri Sumimoto, have made war upon the Mongol Empire. They attacked an isolated stronghold on the island of Kyushu, at the village of Nobeoka on the southeastern coast. The raiding party (the PC's) overcame the token garrison left behind, as it appears that about 2/3 of the Mongol and Chinese forces there had recently departed on a warship headed north. The fort was manned by three Mongol officers and about twenty Chinese and Korean conscripts. While the conscript troops were no obstacle for the raiding party, especially after Yukichi "kaiju'ed" his way through the hatch to the second floor, two Mongol officers fought bravely and well. One managed to hold his own against several of the PC's at once for a short time, and the second actually badly wounded Tatsuzo as he breached the third-floor hatch. In the end, however, the entire garrison was slaughtered. The fort's stores were looted, and then the keep itself was set aflame using a cask of gunpowder and the evil green flames of "Black Mushroom's Sword"

The following supplies and equipment were looted from Nobeoka Fort before it was destroyed:

  • Four 120lb bales of rice, each roughly 200 man/days of rice
  • Two 50gal barrels of cheap sake, good enough for getting drunk but low quality
  • Two barrels of smoked fish, each roughly 100 man/days of food
  • Lamellae, lacing, and fitting sufficient to repair six suits or build three suits of heavy (steel) lamellar armor
  • Lamellae, lacing, and fitting sufficient to repair twenty suits or build ten suits of light (leather) lamellar armor
  • Repair materials for fletching and bowyering
  • Twenty munition-grade sabers (shortswords)
  • Three quality sabers (longswords)
  • Thirty munition-grade spears
  • Eighteen munition-grade daggers
  • Ten munition-grade medium shields
  • Eight regular munition-grade bows (bows)
  • Five munition-grade crossbows
  • Four composite bows (longbows)
  • Several barrels of arrows and bolts
  • $4300 in copper and silver Chinese and Mongol coins
  • Sufficient bales of cotton, linen, and silk to repair fifty uniforms or make twenty-five
  • One 20lb cask of gunpowder
  • Nine Mongol Gunpowder Rockets

Gunpowder Rocket

  • Damage: 3d6+2
  • Range: 50/100/200
  • RoF: 1
  • AP: 4
  • Shots: 1
  • Weight: 0.5 lb
  • Cost: $50

Notes: Area Effect (Medium Burst Template), Unreliable (-2 to attack roll), Rare.

These stats assume that the gunpowder rocket is a relatively powerful and unpredictable weapon that can cause significant damage over a wide area, but is difficult to aim and has a high chance of malfunctioning. The Area Effect (Medium Burst Template) represents the explosive and shrapnel effects of the rocket, while the Unreliable note reflects the historical accounts of their inaccuracy and failure rate.
